5-Reps: Keeping busy, working out is hard, and squeezing oranges versus time

Howdy.

Quick notice that there won’t be an email next week. I’m off camping with my family and then celebrating my 8th wedding anniversary.

Ok cool. You’re cool. First, here’s what’s new this week.

Obvious Choice Podcast Episodes:

*If you only listen to one, make it this one.

Money

1.

Keeping busy soothes our fear. Doing something saves us from the hard work of figuring out whether what we’re doing is making any damn difference.

2.

“When you squeeze an orange, juice comes out. When you squeeze time, priorities come out.”

-Dandapani (listen to him here)

Health

1.

Working out is hard and it hurts and you’ll want to quit and you’ll constantly question why you’re doing it and your bullshit brain that just wants things to be easy and eat Cheetos and watch Netflix will be making increasingly compelling arguments why you should quit and watch the new Avengers Movie instead of working hard to become a real life superhero.

2.

Fitness is a solo sport. The only goal that matters is self-betterment. I used to play team sports but the whole competition things always felt weird. Like, why should I be proud that I happened to beat the other team that happened to show up that day and sucked?

In the gym hard work wins. Plain and simple.

Relationships

1.

When it comes to your family, be there or don’t be there. Never be in-between.

For example: Take an extra five minutes and finish your stuff on your phone in the car. Don’t walk into the house using it.

A Few Good Quotes from a Great Book

“There’s a lot of good waiting for you on the other side of tired.”

“A win doesn’t feel as good as a loss feels bad, and the good feeling doesn’t last as long as the bad.”

“There’s about five times a year you wake up perfect, when you can’t lose to anybody, but it’s not those five times a year that make a tennis player. Or a human being, for that matter. It’s the other times.”

“Butterflies are funny. Some days they make you run to the toilet. Other days they make you horny. Other days they make you laugh, and long for the fight. Deciding which type of butterflies you’ve got going (monarchs or moths) is the first order of business when you’re driving to the arena.”

-Andre Agassi (from Open: An Autobiography)

Going camping with the family next week. That means sharing a tent with the kids next week. Wonder if there’s any motels nearby . . . KIDDING (kinda),
