5-Reps: Chaotic ambition, hiring amateurs, and managing time with kids

Happy 5-Reps Friday!

First, here’s what’s new on the Obvious Choice Podcast these past two weeks. Please click to listen:

Moving on, here are 2 coaching concepts, 2 business nuggets, and a quote to consider this week.

2 Coaching Concepts

1.

Anytime you hire an expert and you begin to tell them how you want them how you want them to deliver their expertise, you have fundamentally hired an amateur.

Because if you don’t let them deliver their professional expertise, you’re in charge again.

2.

Goodheart’s Law states that “when a measure becomes the goal, it ceases to be a good measure.’

When a person says “I want to run a 5km race or I want to lose 10lbs.’ Those are measures, not goal.

Measures are what we believe is representative of what we actually want to achieve.

When people come into your world, they try to speak your language. But in doing that, they’re not actually communicating to you what you need to know. It’s your job to peel back the layers of the onion and get to their real ‘why’.

2 Business Nuggets

1.

Try to connect the benefit (feeling sexy in a dress) to a quantitative measurement (losing 3 inches).

You’re not selling your thing; you’re selling some combination of love, health, security, self-regard, community recognition, or sex.

2.

It’s likely you’re already doing many of the right things but they’re being suffocated under a carpet of chaotic ambition.

Chaotic ambition is reactive, comparative, and rushed. It leads to frustration and burn out.

True ambition is proactive, thoughtful, and strategic. It allows for calculated risk and provides the energy and direction necessary for achievement.

It has become very easy these days to work very hard on the wrong things, the wrong way.

1 Quote to Consider

“We often don’t have a problem with authenticity. We have a problem trusting that our authentic self is enough.”

Calvin’s 6, the perfect age for Halloween. Old enough to hit a lot of houses but young enough to forget how much candy he got. #dadtax in full effect. Get in my belly, Twix!

P.S. This is a good prank

This is a microwave

It cooks food by magnet-blasting radiation, causing food molecules to beat the shit out of each other.

Who comes up with this stuff?

Who figures out how to market it?

Whoever that guy is, he’s probably swimming naked on his private island in the Caribbean surrounded by supermodels right now.

Life is unfair.

But hey, at least you get free professional coaching software.

A distant second place, I admit. But at least it’s something.
