Before we begin, I’m pleased to announce that Unhinged Habits was chosen as the March / April read for bookmembership.com. The goal of the book club is to choose a few great books each year and go deep on them, building a 6 week reading plan. If you are considering reading the book, this is a great option for you to best absorb the material alongside a supportive community.
Moving on, here’s what’s new:
Unhinged Habits, the craftsman spirit, and learning (Reads with Ravi newsletter)
Next, here are a few short thoughts this week.
Money
1
“Most people struggle for small rewards because they are shackled by an unarticulated belief that they are not the kind of people who are worth the finer things in life. It is essential to transform your state of mind.”
– Chin-Ning Chu
2
By the time you become an adult kid, you’ll realize that there’s much more to unlearn than there is to learn.
Health
1
You don’t just lift heavy things. You become someone who can.
2
It feels good to be able to lift the weight because you’re solving a problem. That happiness doesn’t stick around. Because happiness comes from solving problems, not in problems being solved. That’s why you go lift heavier weights.
Relationships
1
“Aniela and I have been married for 38 years, and we still have lots to talk about. We also have a tradition. At noon, we stop working and prepare ourselves for our date. After taking showers and dressing in our favorite clothes, we head to our favorite local restaurant. As soon as we walk in, the entire staff welcomes us with a smile and we head to our favorite table, guided by the chatting host. He offers a menu and a bottle of sparking water while Aniela reads the menu. She chooses a different lunch each time, but I stay with the same appetizer (French fries) and a double vodka for my entrée with a plate of veggies on the side. I love our dates. Nothing is better than sitting with your wife after 42 years of being together and still enjoying the moment.”

“I read mostly fiction, but every now and then a nonfiction book catches my attention because the ideas feel genuinely fresh.
Unhinged Habits was one of those books.”
-Katie Chambers. Owner, Beacon Point Editors
I’m not a normal guy. Unhinged Habits is not a normal book. Normal books are boring, and unhelpful.
If you want a book to repeat the same 6 psychological studies and tell you to ‘just be consistent’, do not read UH.
It’s different. The structure’s different. There’s more narrative flow than most non-fiction. And the advice is less academic, more exploratory.
Will all of what I say (and do) land for you? Probably not.
Some will. Some will make you aware of weird things you do that work for you that you’ve never noticed.
That happened to Katie. The woman from the quote above. She also said that,
“Interestingly, I had followed that same kind of seasonal rhythm in my business recently without realizing it, and it worked incredibly well.”
The benefit there is not newness, but awareness. Now that she knows how powerful a seasonal rhythm is, she can double down on it.
I hope this is the week you stop planning to read (or listen) to my newest book and start reading it.

Cool how much of this is happening, too. Interesting and accomplished people reading the book and immediately wanting to buy copies to gift.
Sophia Hilton is a big beauty influencer in the UK. Got this message from her earlier in the week.

Coach. Author. World explorer. But mostly, Dad.
