5 Reps: Your workout program, consistently good, and how to know a person

Howdy. Here’s are a few short thoughts this week.

Money

1

One of the hardest things to do is to be consistently good long enough for it to pay off. Impactful daily efforts can be quite small when they’re focused.

A few examples:

-If you’re a thought leader, writing five hundred words a day will take you thirty minutes to an hour. Do that for three and a half months, and you’ll have the first draft of a fifty-thousand-word book.

-If you want to get into shape, three hours of exercise a week is enough to reduce your risk of heart disease, depression, weight gain, diabetes, certain types of cancers, and premature death. That’s 1.8 percent of your time.

-If you work in real estate, ten personal messages every weekday to touch base with leads adds up to 2,600 people you’ve given personal attention to every year.

Impactful tasks take a small percentage of the time in every field. Most of the rest of that time is filled with notifications, interruptions, or things we’re not sure we should do but think maybe we should do for reasons we cannot explain.

-An excerpt from The Obvious Choice: Timeless Lessons on Success, Profit, and Finding Your Way

2

Smart people wrongly inject assumed answers into questions. Never disguise your hypothesis as the question.

3

If you’re an entrepreneur, stop adding complexity into your life that you don’t want with time that you don’t have for rewards that you don’t need.

Health

1

Right now, your only priority is becoming the best version of yourself. Don’t stress about the friends you’re losing, the people calling you boring, or the family members who think you’ve gone too far. This season is about finally doing what is best for you. Get in the gym. Read books. Build a body that is strong, capable, and focused. Whoever is meant to walk with the new version of you will meet you there.

2

The importance of the quality of your workout program pales in comparison to your ability to do that program.

Relationships

1

“We don’t have access to all the thoughts that are running through other people’s minds. We just have access to the tiny portion they speak out loud. This leads to the perception that I am much more complicated than you—deeper, more interesting, more subtle, and more high-minded.”

-David Brooks from How to Know a Person
